Saturday, August 1st Update

Today was much calmer than the last few days, thankfully! Like I mentioned this morning, Cooper did not have any seizures after he was put on the EEG monitor yesterday, so he was taken off of it this morning. Yesterday his potassium levels were dangerously high (which can lead to severe heart complications), and this morning his potassium levels were a little low. He was given a potassium drip, and they monitored his levels every two hours today. Fortunately they have stayed within a normal range. That was really the only big news from today! He was put back on TPN (nutrition), and Cooper was able to sleep for the majority of the day.

Tomorrow during rounds his team will discuss starting his breast milk feedings again and will focus on weaning him off of the ventilator and helping him to grow. The last two nights (Thursday and Friday) his weight jumped up a bit, but it was likely because he was retaining fluids because of his high potassium levels. Tonight when they weighed Cooper he was 1060 grams (his birth weight of 2 lbs 5 oz) which is a more accurate and realistic weight. Now that we're finally back where he started, let's hope Coop decides that he's ready to continue to gain weight.

When I woke up this morning I couldn't believe it was August! Then I had to laugh a little (it's funny but not funny) because August still isn't the month Cooper was supposed to be born, or even the month before he was supposed to be born. We are determined to give it all we've got this month, and look forward to the many great steps forward Cooper has ahead of him! We're going to do whatever it takes to bring our boy home. :)

I forgot to take a picture of Cooper today, sorry! We didn't interact with him much today so that he could rest. I'll definitely take some tomorrow. Here's a picture from a week ago that I think is so cute:)
